Venetsanos Winery

Built in 1947 by the acclaimed Venetsanos family, the Venetsanos Winery holds the distinction of being the first industrial winery in Santorini. Carved into the cliffs of the island, its construction was a pioneering feat, leveraging gravity for much of the winemaking process. The location offers breathtaking views of the caldera and the azure Aegean Sea, combining natural beauty with innovative engineering.

Viniculture on Santorini dates back to ancient times, and the island’s unique volcanic soil imparts distinctive qualities to its wines, particularly the Assyrtiko grape variety. During the Venetian rule in the 13th century, Santorini’s wines gained international renown. By the late 19th century, local families, including the Venetsanos, began modernizing production methods amidst a European winemaking renaissance.

The winery, now a testament to mid-20th-century Greek industrial design, remained a crucial pillar of Santorini’s economy, even through Greece’s turbulent post-war years. It attracted visiting dignitaries and played host to international wine experts, contributing to the global appreciation of Greek wines.

Today, the Venetsanos Winery continues to preserve its historical legacy while offering visitors a comprehensive tour of its impressive facilities, complete with tastings of its celebrated vintages.
