Pyrgos Kallistis

Pyrgos Kallistis, a picturesque village, is nestled in the heart of the stunning island of Santorini, Greece. Steeped in rich history and adorned with traditional white-washed houses, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.

Established during the medieval era, specifically in the 13th century, the village rose to prominence when it became the island’s capital under Venetian rule. The iconic Kasteli, a remnant of these medieval fortifications, still stands as a testament to the village’s enduring heritage.

Pyrgos Kallistis is also home to numerous well-preserved churches, including the Church of Theotokaki, which dates back to the 10th century and exemplifies Byzantine architecture. The annual Good Friday celebrations in Pyrgos are renowned for their captivating processions and thousands of illuminated tin cans that light up the village’s pathways, creating a mesmerizing and spiritual atmosphere.

Visitors can explore the narrow, winding streets that lead to the summit, where the remains of the Venetian Kasteli fortress offer insights into the turbulent history of this enchanting destination.
