Pyrgos Kallistis Castle
Back to all places
Dominating the skyline of Pyrgos Kallistis, the castle traces its origins back to the Byzantine era, with initial construction beginning in the 9th century. It was later fortified during the Venetian occupation in the 13th century, serving as a bastion against pirate attacks and Ottoman invasions.
Intriguingly, local legends speak of hidden tunnels beneath the edifice, used during sieges to smuggle resources and people in and out. The castle also played a pivotal role during the Greek War of Independence in the early 19th century, providing refuge and strategy points for Greek fighters.
Today, its layered history is etched into the ruins, offering visitors a tantalizing glimpse into a past filled with war tactics, secret passages, and heroic standoffs. Strolling through its ancient walls, one can almost hear the echoes of knights and revolutionaries who once walked these grounds.
